The life and day-to-day musings of a professional poker player.

About Me

My name is Joey Kanuds. I grew up in a Chicago suburb and just graduated from the University of Iowa with a BS in psychology. I’m moving to Gainesville, Fl to start the next chapter in my life. I’m fairly clueless about what I’d like to do for a living and for the time being I would just like to relax and enjoy life. Enter poker.

After taking many years off of poker, I’ve decided to make it my full time job. Although I’ve never tried a “conventional” 9-5 job,  I can tell you it’s just not for me. I don’t take orders well, I don’t do well in the mornings, and I don’t play well with others. I enjoy warm weather (hence Florida), playing golf, and sitting by a pool. For the time being, there isn’t anything I want more than to work whatever hours I want from home and afford myself the freedom to do the things I love. I can play golf on a Tuesday. I can wake up and sit by the pool for a couple hours, then hit the tables in the afternoon. I can sleep as late as I want. I can do whatever I want. My life is home alone meets risky business.

People always ask me why I have a blog. Who reads it? Who cares about you and what you have to say? First and foremost, this blog is for me. It acts as motivation. Publicly set goals are much more effective than private goals so I’m hoping the prospect of failing publicly will inspire me to work hard enough to succeed. Secondly, it serves as a journal and record for this time in my life and is something I can look back on and relive. Beyond that, true blog readers understand. Its fun to read an ongoing story and it’s fun to live vicariously through others. Why do you think we have so many trashy reality shows?

This blog and my life can go one of two ways: I can rise through the ranks of online poker and live the dream… Or I can fail miserably, have to re-evaluate my entire life, and be forced to get a real job. Both paths make for a good blog.

I don’t have a traditional job. I don’t wear a suit and tie to work. I actually don’t even own a suit. In fact, I work naked. I can live anywhere I want. I can travel when and where I want. I’m my own boss. I set my own hours. I answer to no one. I’m just livin’ the dream.
